Same salary, less tax. A single filer earning $80,000 with no other income takes the standard deduction. In 2026 taxable income is $63,900 and federal income tax is $8,770.00. In 2027, with the projected $16,600 deduction and wider brackets, taxable income is $63,400 and the tax is $8,489.50: $280.50 less, before any raise. Our income tax calculator still uses 2026 brackets.
Maximum 401(k) at 61. Someone turning 61 in 2027 could defer $25,500 plus the $11,750 age 60–63 catch-up, $37,250 in total, if the projections hold. High earners (prior-year wages from that employer above $150,000, a threshold that is indexed) must make the catch-up as Roth. Employer contributions count only toward the $75,000 overall limit.
Frequently asked questions
What are the 2027 federal tax brackets?
The IRS has not published them yet; it released the 2026 figures on October 9, 2025, and the 2027 revenue procedure is expected in late October or November. Thomson Reuters Checkpoint projects the standard deduction at $16,600 single, $33,200 joint and $24,900 head of household, with the 12% bracket ending at $52,025 for single filers and the 37% rate starting at $661,375. The seven rates (10% to 37%) stay the same under the 2025 tax law.
What is the 401(k) limit for 2027?
Milliman projects $25,500, up $1,000, with an $8,500 catch-up at 50+ and $11,750 at ages 60 to 63. Milliman said the limit would stay at $25,000 only if September CPI rose less than 0.04%; it rose 0.6% (BLS, October 14, 2026), so $25,500 is very likely. The IRS announces the official limits in late October or November; last year it was November 13. The same limit applies to 403(b) and governmental 457(b) plans.
What is the IRA contribution limit for 2027?
Not known yet. It is $7,500 for 2026 and rises only in $500 steps, so 2027 will be either $7,500 or $8,000, and forecasters disagree on which. The IRS publishes it with the 401(k) limits. The catch-up for 50 and older, $1,100 in 2026, is also indexed.
What are the HSA limits for 2027?
$4,500 for self-only coverage and $9,000 for family coverage, plus $1,000 if you are 55 or older. These are final: the IRS published them in Rev. Proc. 2026-24 in May 2026. To contribute, your health plan's deductible must be at least $1,750 (self-only) or $3,500 (family).
How much will Social Security go up in 2027?
3.6%, announced on October 14, 2026, effective with the January 2027 payment. The average retired worker goes from $2,095 to $2,170 a month. Workers pay 6.2% Social Security tax on wages up to $192,300, up from $184,500.
How much will Medicare Part B cost in 2027?
CMS announces the 2027 premium in mid-November 2026. The 2026 Medicare Trustees Report projects $209.50 a month, up from $202.90, and a $292 deductible. The income brackets for IRMAA surcharges are indexed and will be published at the same time.
What is the estate tax exemption for 2027?
The 2025 tax law set it at $15,000,000 per person for 2026, indexed after that. Estate-planning attorney Dan Evans projects $15,470,000 for 2027, and the annual gift exclusion rising from $19,000 to $20,000 per recipient. The IRS confirms both in its inflation revenue procedure this fall.
